The airport was closed between 1995 and 2004. It was last depicted on the 1993 Dallas-Fort Worth Sectional Chart and its runway was still clearly visible in a 1995 aerial photograph. By the time the 2004 sectional chart was published, the airport was no longer listed, indicating it ceased operations in the late 1990s or early 2000s.
The exact reason is not officially documented, as is common for private airfields. However, the closure was almost certainly due to a change in land ownership and its subsequent conversion to a private residential estate. The transition from a functional airstrip to a residential property with a new house built nearby confirms a change in land use, making aviation activities incompatible.
The site is now a private residential property. Modern satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a large house with several outbuildings and manicured grounds. The faint, linear outline of the former north-south runway can still be discerned as a cleared grassy area, but it is now part of the property's lawn and pasture. All dedicated aviation infrastructure, such as hangars or markings, has been removed.
Flying E Ranch Airport was a private general aviation airfield. It was not depicted on charts in 1977 but was listed in the 1982 AOPA Airport Directory. At that time, it was described as having a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway, designated 17/35. The airport's operations were limited to serving the ranch owner (listed as W.L. Elder in 1982) and likely other local pilots with small, light aircraft for recreational or personal travel purposes. It held no commercial or military significance.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Flying E Ranch Airport. The land is privately owned and has been fully repurposed for residential use. Re-establishing an airport would require the current landowner's initiative and significant investment to meet modern standards, making it extremely unlikely. The property is considered permanently closed to aviation.
