The airport closed sometime between 1998 and 2004. It was last depicted on the 1998 World Aeronautical Chart but was absent from the 2004 Sectional Chart. Aerial imagery from 2006 confirms its closure, showing large closed-runway 'X' symbols painted on the turf runway.
The closure was due to economic reasons, specifically the sale of the land for real estate development. The airpark's location became valuable for suburban housing as the Angier area grew. This is a common reason for the closure of small, privately-owned airfields in expanding communities.
The site of the former airpark has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision. The land where the runway and taxiways once were is now occupied by single-family homes, streets (such as Tuscany Drive and Portofino Drive), and neighborhood infrastructure. All traces of the airfield have been erased.
Fish Airpark (which also used the FAA Location Identifier 5NC5) was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was established sometime between 1972 and 1979 and was owned by H.L. Fish. The 1982 AOPA Airport Directory listed it as having a single 2,500-foot unpaved turf runway (18/36). Its operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft for personal and recreational use by its owner and possibly other local pilots. It did not handle commercial, cargo, or military operations and its significance was purely local.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently converted to a high-density residential area, making it physically and legally impossible to re-establish an airport on the site.
