Approximately between 1999 and 2002. Aeronautical charts from 1998 still depicted the airfield as active, and a 1999 aerial photo shows the runway intact. However, by 2002, aerial imagery shows the runway had been removed and construction for a residential development was underway.
The closure was due to economic reasons, specifically lucrative real estate development. The land, located in a growing suburban area south of Atlanta, became more valuable for residential housing than as a private airfield. The property was sold and redeveloped to meet housing demand.
The site of the former Holder's Field is now a residential housing subdivision called 'The Preserve'. The street names within the development, such as 'Holders Cove', serve as a nod to the former airfield and its owner. There are no visible remnants of the runway, hangars, or any other airport facilities; the land has been completely repurposed for residential use.
Holder's Field was a private general aviation airfield that was established sometime between 1965 and 1968. It was owned and operated by W.W. Holder. The airfield featured a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length, aligned north-south (Runway 17/35). It primarily served the owner and likely other local pilots for recreational flying. While not of major national significance, it was a typical example of the numerous private airstrips that supported the general aviation community in rural and suburban America during the latter half of the 20th century.
There are zero prospects for reopening Holder's Field. The land has been permanently redeveloped into a fully occupied residential neighborhood, making any return to aviation operations impossible.
