The exact closure date is not officially recorded, but evidence suggests the airport ceased operations sometime between the late 1970s and the early 1990s. The airfield was depicted on the 1968 Miami Sectional Chart but was no longer listed on aeronautical charts by 1998. Aerial photos from 1999 show a clearly defined but unused runway.
The airport was a private facility, and its closure was most likely due to a cessation of use by the ranch owners. Reasons for this are not publicly documented but are typical for private airfields: the specific need for an on-site airstrip diminished, the primary users (pilots) may have retired or passed away, or the costs of maintenance and insurance were no longer justified for its limited use. There is no indication of closure due to an accident or external pressures.
The site of the former airport is now fully integrated back into the Adams Ranch's agricultural land. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals the faint, straight-line outline of the former runway, which is now completely overgrown with grass and is indistinguishable from the surrounding pastures on the ground. The land is actively used for cattle grazing, and there are no remaining airport structures or markings.
Adams Ranch Airport was a private airfield exclusively serving the Adams Ranch, a historically significant and one of Florida's largest family-owned cattle ranches, founded in 1937. The airport's primary role was to support the vast ranching operations. It was used for personal transportation for the Adams family and ranch managers, for conducting aerial surveys of the thousands of acres of land and cattle herds, and potentially for light cargo and emergency access. When active, it featured a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 3,000 feet in length.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Adams Ranch Airport. The site is on private property, the former runway would require complete reconstruction to be usable, and the operational need that existed in the mid-20th century likely no longer exists for the ranch. Reopening is considered extremely unlikely.
