The exact closure date is not officially documented. However, based on analysis of historical satellite imagery, the heliport appears to have fallen into disuse and was converted to a parking area sometime in the mid-to-late 2000s. Imagery from the early 2000s shows a clearly marked, active pad, while images from 2010 onwards show significant fading and use as a vehicle lot.
The primary reason for the closure was operational consolidation and cost-efficiency. The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) centralized its Aviation Unit operations at a single, fully-equipped facility, Miami Executive Airport (KTMB). This strategy is more economical and efficient for maintenance, fueling, and dispatch than maintaining multiple satellite helipads at district stations, which became redundant as helicopter range and operational tactics evolved.
The site is the location of the active Miami-Dade Police Department Midwest District Station (7707 NW 103rd St, Hialeah Gardens, FL). The former concrete helipad, with a faded 'H' marking still visible, is now used as a parking lot for police cruisers, department vehicles, and other equipment.
The heliport was located at the Miami-Dade Police Department's Midwest District Station. It served as a forward operating and staging pad for police helicopters. Its purpose was to support law enforcement operations by allowing helicopters to land, refuel, or stage for missions like aerial patrol, suspect searches, and rapid response (e.g., SWAT team deployment) directly within their assigned district. This increased the operational endurance and response time of air units without requiring them to return to their main base.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The current operational model for large police aviation units favors centralization at dedicated airfields. The infrastructure is not maintained for aviation use, and reactivating it would be contrary to the current cost-saving and operational strategy of the MDPD.
