Approximately between 1993 and 2002. The airport was still depicted as an active private airfield on the 1993 Washington Sectional Aeronautical Chart but was no longer shown on the 2002 edition of the chart.
Economic reasons, specifically the sale of the land for real estate development. As a small, privately-owned airfield, its value as land for residential housing likely surpassed its value as an airport, leading to its closure and subsequent redevelopment.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential subdivision called 'The Hills of Stanardsville'. The runway, hangars, and any other airport infrastructure have been removed and replaced with single-family homes, paved streets, and lawns. As a nod to its aviation history, one of the streets in the development is named 'Runway Drive', which is located on the southern portion of the former airfield.
Hilldale Airport, which also used the FAA Location Identifier (LID) VG23, was a small, private general aviation airfield. It became operational sometime between 1968 and 1970. The airport consisted of a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,200 feet long, oriented north-south (Runway 18/36). Its operations were limited to serving small, single-engine aircraft for personal and recreational use by its owner, W.L. McClung, and likely other local pilots with permission. It did not handle commercial or military traffic and its significance was purely local to the general aviation community in the Stanardsville area for about three decades.
Non-existent. The land has been permanently and fully converted to a residential use. There are no plans, nor is it feasible, to ever reopen the site as an airport.
