Approximately between the late 1980s and early 1990s. The airfield was depicted as an active private field on the 1974 Washington Sectional Chart but was no longer listed on the 1993 edition of the chart, indicating its closure occurred within that timeframe.
The airfield was a private facility owned and operated by Camp Friendship. The closure was not due to a specific incident but was likely an economic and operational decision by the camp's management. Reasons typically include the high costs of maintenance, liability insurance, and a shift in the camp's focus, which led to the land being repurposed for other recreational activities deemed more valuable to the camp's mission.
The site of the former airfield has been fully absorbed into the Camp Friendship campus. Satellite imagery clearly shows that the land once occupied by the runway is now used for various camp activities. This includes large sports fields (soccer/lacrosse), a challenge/ropes course, and a significant parking area for camp vehicles, including buses. While the faint outline of the runway is still visible from the air, it is completely obstructed by these new facilities and is no longer usable as an airstrip.
Camp Friendship Airfield was a private turf airstrip with a single unpaved runway, approximately 2,200 feet in length. Its primary and sole purpose was to serve the adjacent Camp Friendship, a large residential summer camp founded in 1966. The airfield facilitated access for camp owners, staff, or visitors arriving by small, private general aviation aircraft. It never handled commercial or significant military operations. Its historical importance is purely local, representing a type of private recreational aviation facility that was more common in the mid-20th century.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been permanently and extensively redeveloped with recreational structures and parking lots. Re-establishing an airfield would require the demolition of current camp facilities and significant investment, making it practically and economically infeasible. The camp's current land use appears to be permanent.
