The airport was closed between 1995 and 2003. The last known aerial photograph showing the airport as operational was taken in 1995. By the time of the 2003 aeronautical chart, it was marked as closed, and 2004 satellite imagery shows the beginning of residential construction on the property.
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment and real estate development. Located near the expanding Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, the land became more valuable for residential housing than for its use as a private airfield. The property was sold to developers to build a new housing community.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing subdivision called 'Blue Sky Estates'. The main road through the neighborhood, 'Blue Sky Drive', is a direct homage to the airport and runs along the approximate centerline of the former runway. The airport infrastructure, including the runway and hangars, has been entirely removed and replaced with single-family homes, streets, and utilities.
Blue Skies Airport (also known by its FAA identifier 7TA5) was a privately-owned, public-use general aviation airport established sometime between 1963 and 1968. It served the local aviation community in Azle, Texas, for several decades. The airport featured a single north/south turf runway (17/35) approximately 2,600 feet long. Operations were typical for a small airfield, handling light single-engine aircraft for recreational flying and personal transportation. It had a few hangars on the west side of the runway to house private aircraft.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed for high-density residential use, making any return to aviation operations impossible.
