The airport was closed between 1996 and 2002. It was still listed as active in the 1996 AOPA Airport Directory but was no longer depicted on the 2003 San Antonio Sectional Chart. Aerial imagery from 2002 confirms its closure, showing the runway marked with large, painted 'X' symbols, indicating it was no longer operational.
The primary reason for closure was economic, driven by urban encroachment and real estate development. The city of Leander, a suburb of Austin, experienced rapid population growth and suburbanization during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The land occupied by the airport became significantly more valuable for residential development than for its use as a private airfield, leading to its sale and redevelopment.
The airport site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer recognizable as an airfield. The land is now occupied by a large, dense residential housing subdivision named 'The Fairways at Crystal Falls'. All traces of the runway, hangars, and other airport infrastructure have been entirely removed and replaced by homes, streets, and suburban landscaping.
Kittie Hill Airport (formerly FAA LID: TE89) was a small, privately owned general aviation airfield. Established prior to 1987, it was owned by M.A. Kittie. The airport featured a single 3,000-foot by 100-foot turf runway designated 17/35. Its operations were modest; as of 1996, it was the home base for just three single-engine aircraft. Its significance was not in large-scale operations but as a representative of the numerous small, private airstrips that once dotted the rural landscape around growing American cities before being consumed by development.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Kittie Hill Airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed for high-density residential use, making any return to aviation operations physically and legally impossible.
It is very weird to make DoorDash deliveries in a samey, bland neighborhood that used to be a thriving grass airfield.
