The heliport was closed sometime between 1994 and 2002. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the helipad marking was clearly visible on the property in 1994, but it had been removed and the area was landscaped into a lawn by 2002.
The closure was due to business and economic reasons. The heliport was a private facility that served the corporate headquarters of its owner, Roubin & Janeiro Inc., a prominent real estate development firm. The company was eventually sold or dissolved, and the Tysons Overlook building became a multi-tenant office space. With the original owner and operator gone, the business case for the private heliport was eliminated.
The site of the former heliport is now a landscaped grassy area on the property of the Tysons Overlook office building, located at 7940 Jones Branch Drive, McLean, VA. The physical helipad and all associated markings have been completely removed, and the land is now part of the commercial office park's manicured grounds.
The Roubin & Janeiro Inc Heliport was a private facility representative of the corporate boom in the Tysons Corner area during the 1980s. It was located on the grounds of the company's headquarters, the Tysons Overlook office building. Its primary function was to provide rapid executive transport for the firm's principals, allowing them to bypass the Washington D.C. area's significant road traffic to visit construction sites, attend meetings, and travel efficiently throughout the region.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. The site has been fully repurposed, and the original operational need for the facility no longer exists. Given the dense commercial and residential development in the Tysons area, re-establishing a heliport at this location would likely face significant regulatory and community hurdles.
