Approximately January 1, 2010. The heliport ceased operations concurrently with the closure of the inpatient and emergency services at the Aliquippa Hospital (then part of the Heritage Valley Health System).
The heliport was closed as a direct result of the closure of its associated medical facility, Aliquippa Hospital. With the cessation of the hospital's emergency department and inpatient units, the primary function of the heliport for medical evacuations (medevac) and critical patient transfers was eliminated.
The heliport, along with the entire Aliquippa Hospital building, no longer exists. The hospital was demolished in 2019. The site at the specified coordinates is now a vacant, graded lot. The land has been cleared for potential future redevelopment, but the former medical facility and its heliport are completely gone.
The Aliquippa Hospital Heliport was a vital piece of infrastructure for the hospital and the surrounding community. Its sole purpose was to facilitate rapid air medical transport. It allowed air ambulance services, such as STAT MedEvac, to land directly at the hospital, significantly reducing transport times for patients suffering from critical trauma, cardiac events, strokes, or other life-threatening conditions. This capability was crucial for connecting the local community to a higher level of care and was an integral part of the regional emergency medical services (EMS) network.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. Since the hospital it served has been permanently closed and demolished, there is no longer a need for a medical heliport at this location. Any future use of the site would require entirely new construction, and there are no public plans to build a new hospital or a facility that would necessitate a heliport.
