Approximately between 2000 and 2002. The airfield was depicted on the 1998 Detroit Sectional Chart but was no longer listed on the 2002 Lake Huron Sectional Chart.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented. As a private airfield owned by an individual (Joseph Kozal), closure was most likely due to personal circumstances. Common reasons for the closure of such small, private strips include the high cost of maintenance and insurance, liability concerns, the owner's retirement from flying, or the sale of the property. The land was part of an active farm, and the owner passed away in 2013, over a decade after the airfield closed.
The site is currently private agricultural land, part of a farm. The faint outline of the former grass runway is still visible in satellite imagery as a mowed strip of grass running through a field. However, it is no longer maintained or used as an airfield. There are no hangars or other aviation-specific structures remaining.
Kozal Airfield (formerly assigned the FAA Location Identifier MI81) was a private general aviation airfield. Its significance was primarily local, serving its owner and possibly other local pilots for recreational flying. It was established sometime between 1973 and 1979 and was operational for over two decades. The airfield consisted of a single unpaved, north-south turf runway (18/36) with a length of approximately 2,600 feet. It handled light, single-engine aircraft typical of private, recreational aviation.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Kozal Airfield. Given that it was a private strip whose owner is deceased and the land has been fully integrated back into a farm, the likelihood of it ever being re-certified and reopened as an airport is virtually zero.
