The airport was closed sometime between 1971 and 1980. It was still depicted as an active airfield on the 1971 San Francisco Sectional Chart but had been removed and was no longer shown on the 1980 edition of the same chart.
The exact reason for the closure is not officially documented. However, the most probable cause is economic. As a small, private, unpaved airfield in a heavily agricultural area, it likely became financially unviable to maintain, or the landowner chose to convert the property back to more profitable agricultural use. This was a common fate for many small, private airfields in the mid to late 20th century.
The site of the former Emmett Field is now actively cultivated agricultural land. Satellite imagery clearly shows that the area has been fully repurposed for farming. However, faint outlines of the former north/south runway are still visible from the air as a 'crop mark' or soil discoloration, a ghostly remnant of its aviation past. There are no remaining airport buildings, hangars, or infrastructure on the site.
Emmett Field was a small, private general aviation airfield. It had no known military significance. Its primary role was to serve local private pilots. A 1962 AOPA Airport Directory described it as having a single 2,200-foot unpaved runway and included the note 'Private. Use at own risk.' Operations would have been limited to light, single-engine aircraft for personal transportation and potentially agricultural support. Its historical significance is as a typical example of the numerous private airstrips that dotted rural America, providing essential access for local farmers, ranchers, and aviation enthusiasts before many were closed.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Emmett Field. The land is privately owned and has been used for agriculture for over 40 years. Given the complete removal of all airport infrastructure and the proximity of the active Dos Palos Municipal Airport (KDLI), which serves the area's current aviation needs, a reopening is considered extremely unlikely.
