Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2003-2005. The airport was last depicted on the 1993 Washington Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 2005 edition. Aerial imagery from the early 2000s shows the runway becoming progressively overgrown, indicating a cessation of operations during this period.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons and land redevelopment. As a small, private airfield, its operation was likely dependent on the owner. The land was ultimately sold and repurposed for a more profitable commercial use. There is no evidence of closure due to a specific accident or military conversion.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the location of the Middlesex Solar Farm, a large-scale photovoltaic power station. Construction of the solar farm began around 2014, obliterating all traces of the former runway, hangars, and any other aviation-related structures. The entire footprint of the former airport is now covered in solar panels.

Historical Significance

JW Stone Airport was a private general aviation airfield named after its owner, J.W. Stone. It became operational sometime before 1987, the year it first appeared on aeronautical charts. The facility consisted of a single unpaved 3,000-foot turf runway (Runway 18/36). It primarily served private pilots for recreational flying and potentially supported local agricultural or business-related aviation activities in rural Nash County. It was never a major public transport hub and did not have an IATA code.

Reopening Prospects

None. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for industrial-scale energy production. The significant capital investment in the solar farm infrastructure makes any prospect of reopening the airport infeasible.
