Circa 2018-2019. The heliport was approved in 2012 and became operational shortly after. By late 2019, local news sources were referring to it as 'defunct', indicating that regular operations had ceased sometime prior to that.
Primarily economic reasons. The heliport was intended to serve two main purposes: emergency medical flights and charter services for high-end casino patrons. The demand for VIP charter flights did not reach a sustainable level to justify the high operational costs. Factors included the niche market for such a service and the performance limitations and increased costs of helicopter operations at a high altitude (over 8,500 feet). Ultimately, the venture was not financially viable.
The site is currently the top deck of the Ameristar Casino's parking garage. The helipad markings, including the large 'H' and the surrounding circle, are still faintly visible on the pavement. However, the area is no longer maintained as an active heliport and is used for general vehicle parking for casino and hotel guests.
Miner's Mesa Heliport was a modern facility that opened around 2013. It was uniquely located on the top level of the newly constructed parking garage for the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa in Black Hawk. The City of Black Hawk leased the facility to Air Methods, a major operator of air medical services. The heliport's creation was part of a broader strategy to enhance the prestige and accessibility of Black Hawk's casinos, positioning them as premier destinations. When active, it handled occasional air ambulance (EMS) flights and a limited number of private charter flights, intended to shuttle casino 'whales' from Denver-area airports.
There are no known public plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The space has been repurposed for a more practical daily need (parking), and the economic conditions that led to its closure have not changed. The reopening of the heliport is considered highly unlikely.
