The exact date is unknown, but the airport was closed sometime between 1970 and 1986. It was depicted on the 1970 Wichita Sectional Chart but was no longer listed on the 1986 edition of the chart. Topographical maps from as late as 1995 still labeled it 'Haxton Landing Strip', but it was definitively non-operational by that time.
The airport was a privately owned airstrip, listed under the ownership of J. B. Haxton. While the specific reason for its closure is not officially documented, it was almost certainly due to private circumstances. Common reasons for the closure of such small, private fields include the owner's retirement from flying, death, sale of the property, or the prohibitive cost of maintenance and insurance. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a major accident or for military conversion.
The airport is permanently closed and has been completely reclaimed by nature and agriculture. Current satellite imagery of the coordinates shows no trace of the former runway or any associated aviation structures like hangars or sheds. The land is now indistinguishable from the surrounding rural landscape, appearing as open farmland or pasture. The site has been fully returned to agricultural use.
Haxton Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield with no significant military or commercial history. Its primary function was to serve the personal and potentially agricultural needs of its owner. The facility consisted of a single unpaved turf runway, designated 17/35, with a length of approximately 2,100 feet. Operations would have been limited to small, single-engine propeller aircraft typical of general aviation, such as Cessnas or Pipers, used for personal transportation, recreation, or agricultural activities like crop dusting.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Haxton Airport. Given that it has been closed for approximately four decades and the land has been fully repurposed for agriculture, re-establishing an airport at this location would be impractical and economically unviable. There is no public or private initiative to do so.
