Approximately between 2012 and 2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the grass runway was clearly defined and maintained in 2011, but by 2015 it appears unmaintained and is being reclaimed by the surrounding farmland.
Cessation of private use. The airstrip was a private field on a farm owned by local farmer and pilot Donald L. Bardwell (1930-2018). Small, private airstrips like this often close when the owner ceases aviation activities due to age, health, or a change in property ownership. The land was subsequently converted back to full agricultural use.
The site has been fully reverted to agricultural land. The area of the former north-south runway is now an active farm field, used for growing hay or other crops. While a faint outline of the strip may be visible from the air under certain conditions, it is no longer functional or identifiable as an airstrip from the ground.
Bardwell Airstrip was a private, general aviation airfield with local and personal significance. It was not a public or commercial airport and did not handle scheduled flights or military operations. Its primary function was to support the recreational flying activities of its owner. The operations would have consisted of light, single-engine aircraft taking off and landing from the grass runway. It serves as an example of the numerous private farm strips that support personal aviation in rural America.
None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Bardwell Airstrip. The original owner and operator passed away in 2018, and the land is an integrated part of a working farm. Re-establishing the airstrip is considered highly improbable.
