Approximately between 1995 and 2002. The airport was last depicted on the 1993 Dallas-Fort Worth Sectional Chart and was still visible and intact in a 1995 aerial photograph. However, by 2002, large commercial buildings had been constructed over the northern portion of the runway, indicating it had ceased operations sometime in the intervening years.
The airport was closed due to the redevelopment of the land for commercial use. Its location near Interstate 35 made the property valuable for commercial development as the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex expanded northward. The construction of large buildings directly on the former runway path made aviation operations impossible.
The site has been completely repurposed. The northern half of the former airfield is now an industrial/commercial area occupied by several businesses, including truck and trailer repair services, with large metal buildings built directly over the former runway. The southern half of the runway's outline is still faintly visible as an open, undeveloped field, but it is no longer maintained or used for aviation.
Flying V Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was not a major transportation hub and had no known military significance. Its primary function was to serve the personal and recreational flying needs of its owner and possibly other local pilots. First appearing on aeronautical charts in 1981, it featured a single north/south unpaved runway, approximately 2,600 feet in length. The name 'Flying V' is believed to have originated from a distinct V-shaped treeline located at the southern end of the runway. Operations would have been limited to light, single-engine aircraft.
There are no prospects for reopening the Flying V Airport. The permanent construction of commercial buildings on the former runway and the redevelopment of the property for industrial use make it impossible to restore the site to its original function as an airfield.
