Approximately 1970-1971. The airport was depicted on the 1970 Wichita Sectional Aeronautical Chart but was no longer present on the 1971 edition.
The specific reason is not officially documented. However, the closure was likely due to economic factors or the cessation of operations by its private owner. It was common for small, private general aviation fields from that era to close when they became financially unsustainable, the owner retired or passed away, or the land was sold for more profitable redevelopment. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a major accident or for military conversion.
The airport is permanently closed and the site has been redeveloped. The land is now used for commercial and industrial purposes. Several large buildings have been constructed directly on the northern and southern ends of the former runway alignment. While a faint outline of the central portion of the grass runway is still visible in satellite imagery between the buildings, the site is completely unsuitable for any aviation activity.
Andrews Airport (also known as Andrews Field) was a small, privately-owned general aviation airport that served the Carthage, Missouri area from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. Its earliest known depiction was on the 1953 Wichita Sectional Chart. During its operational years, it featured a single turf runway, listed in 1962 as Runway 17/35 with a length of 2,100 feet. The airport was operated by 'Carthage Air Service' and supported local private pilots, flight training, and personal business travel with light aircraft. It represented a typical post-WWII local airfield before general aviation consolidated at larger, publicly-funded airports.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Andrews Airport. The redevelopment of the land with permanent industrial buildings on the former runway makes reopening physically and logistically impossible.
