The airport was closed sometime between 2003 and 2009. It was last depicted on the 2003 Brownsville Sectional Aeronautical Chart but was no longer shown on the 2009 edition of the chart.
The specific reason for closure is not officially documented. As a small, privately owned airfield, the closure was most likely due to a private decision by its owner. Common reasons for such closures include the owner's retirement or death, the sale of the property, or the prohibitive costs of maintenance and insurance. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed for military conversion, urban development, or due to a major accident.
The site is now private property and has reverted to agricultural use. As of the latest satellite imagery, the faint outline of the former north-south runway is still visible but is overgrown and appears to be part of the surrounding farmland. A building that was likely a hangar or a residence associated with the airfield still stands at the south end of the former runway. The airfield is completely decommissioned and unusable for any aviation activity.
Cannon Aviation Airport, also known as Cannon Field, was a private general aviation airfield established sometime between 1967 and 1978. According to the 1982 AOPA Airports USA Directory, it was managed by Joe Cannon and featured a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway aligned north/south (17/35). The airport's operations were characteristic of a rural 'farm strip,' likely supporting the personal recreational flying of its owner and potentially local agricultural aviation activities like crop dusting, which is common in the Rio Grande Valley. Its significance was primarily local, serving as a private base for general aviation aircraft.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Cannon Aviation Airport. The land has been integrated into the surrounding private property for agricultural purposes, and its revival as an airfield is extremely unlikely without a significant and unforeseen investment and change in land use by the current owner.
