Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately February 26, 2017. The heliport ceased operations concurrently with the closure of the Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital, which was officially replaced by the new Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital on this date.

Reason for Closure

The heliport was closed because the hospital it served, Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital, was shut down and relocated. The aging hospital facility in Nassawadox was replaced by the new, modern Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, which opened in Onancock, Virginia, approximately 15 miles to the north. The closure was a direct result of the hospital's replacement and relocation, not due to any specific incident or economic failure of the heliport itself.

Current Status

The heliport no longer exists. The former Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital building and its associated facilities, including the helipad, were demolished starting in late 2021. The site is currently undergoing redevelopment into a mixed-use community known as 'Bayfront at Nassawadox', which is planned to include residential housing, commercial space, and some outpatient healthcare services.

Historical Significance

The heliport was a critical component of the emergency medical infrastructure for the rural Eastern Shore of Virginia. Its primary function was to serve as a landing zone for medical evacuation (medevac) helicopters, such as the Sentara Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance. It enabled the rapid transport of critically ill and injured patients from Northampton and Accomack counties to major trauma centers and specialized hospitals in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and other regional cities. For over four decades, it was the key aviation access point for life-saving emergency care on the peninsula.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. Its function has been permanently transferred to the heliport at the new Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (FAA LID: 1VA9) in Onancock, which now serves the region's medical air transport needs.
