Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport was closed sometime between 1981 and 1990. It was last depicted on the 1981 Dallas-Fort Worth Sectional Aeronautical Chart and was no longer present on the 1990 edition. Aerial photos from 1995 show the runway was still visible but residential construction had already begun on the property.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment and subsequent real estate development. McKinney, a suburb in the rapidly growing Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, expanded significantly during the 1980s. The land occupied by the private airfield became far more valuable for residential housing, leading to its sale and redevelopment.

Current Status

The site of the former Drewery Airport is now completely occupied by a residential subdivision. The land is covered with single-family homes, streets, and associated infrastructure. The history of the site is commemorated by a street named 'Drewery Drive' which runs directly through the former airport grounds.

Historical Significance

Drewery Airport was a small, privately owned general aviation airfield. It was established sometime between 1963 and 1968 and was owned by J.S. Drewery. The airport featured a single unpaved, turf runway, approximately 2,100 feet long, oriented in a north/south direction. It served local private pilots and their light aircraft, representing a common type of private airstrip that existed on the outskirts of major cities before being overtaken by suburban sprawl.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been fully and densely developed for residential use, making a return to aviation operations physically and economically impossible.
