Approximately between 2005 and 2009. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the helipad markings were clearly visible in 1995 and still faintly visible in 2004, but they are completely gone in imagery from 2010 onwards. This indicates the heliport was decommissioned during that period.
Economic and logistical reasons. The heliport was a private facility for the KXAS-TV (NBC 5) news station. During the 2000s, the television news industry shifted away from individual stations owning and operating their own helicopters due to the extremely high costs of maintenance, fuel, insurance, and staffing. It became more cost-effective to contract with third-party aviation companies that provide helicopter services to multiple news outlets in the same market.
The site is the location of the KXAS-TV / NBC 5 broadcast studios and offices at 4805 Amon Carter Blvd, Fort Worth, TX. The area that once served as the helipad, located in the southeast corner of the property, is now used as part of the employee parking lot. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure at the site.
Action 5 Heliport was the private base of operations for the news helicopter of KXAS-TV, the NBC affiliate in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. The name 'Action 5' is a direct reference to the station's news branding. The helicopter, likely known as 'Chopper 5' or a similar callsign, was used for Electronic News Gathering (ENG), providing live aerial coverage of breaking news, traffic, and major events throughout North Texas from the 1980s through the early 2000s. Its existence was representative of an era when major market TV stations maintained their own dedicated aviation assets.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The industry-wide shift to using shared, third-party helicopter services is now standard practice. KXAS-TV currently utilizes a shared helicopter (branded as the 'Texas Sky Ranger') which is based at a dedicated aviation facility, not at the television station. Reopening a private, single-use heliport at this location is considered highly improbable.
