The airport was closed sometime between 1996 and 2004. It was still listed as active in the 1996 AOPA Airport Directory but was no longer depicted on the 2004 Detroit Sectional Aeronautical Chart, indicating it had been officially decommissioned within that timeframe.
The specific reason for the closure is not officially documented. The closure of small, privately-owned airfields like Pine Acres is commonly attributed to economic factors, such as the owner's retirement or death, the sale of the property for other development, rising operational and liability insurance costs, or a general decline in use. The subsequent repurposing of the land for energy extraction suggests the property was sold for a more profitable industrial use.
The site of the former airport is now used for industrial purposes, specifically for natural gas or oil extraction, which is prevalent in the Utica and Marcellus Shale regions of Ohio. High-resolution satellite imagery shows that the land has been significantly altered. While the faint, overgrown outline of the former northeast/southwest runway is still visible, the property is now occupied by well pads, access roads, pipelines, and other infrastructure associated with the energy industry. All former aviation structures, such as hangars, appear to have been removed.
Pine Acres Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. It held no major national significance but was a local asset for recreational flying. The earliest known depiction of the airfield is on the 1965 USGS topographical map. Throughout its operational history, it featured a single turf runway. The 1981 AOPA Airports USA Directory described it as having a 2,200-foot turf runway designated 5/23. Operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft used by private pilots for personal and recreational purposes.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Pine Acres Airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for industrial use. The presence of significant oil and gas extraction infrastructure on the site makes any return to aviation activities infeasible and prohibitive from both a safety and economic standpoint. The airport is considered permanently closed.
