Circa 2001-2002. The heliport was decommissioned following the closure of the industrial facility it served. The parent company, Halter Marine Group, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2001, leading to the sale of its assets, including the Hitchcock facility.
Economic reasons. The heliport was a private facility exclusively serving the adjacent Halter Marine fabrication yard. When the parent company went through bankruptcy and restructuring, the Hitchcock plant was closed and sold. With the closure of the industrial operation, the heliport no longer had a purpose and was subsequently decommissioned.
The site has been completely repurposed. The former Halter Marine property, including the location of the heliport, is now the Hitchcock Independent School District (ISD) Maintenance and Transportation Facility, located at 6621 FM 2004. The original industrial buildings have been adapted for the school district's use, and the concrete pad and open area that once served as the heliport are now part of the paved lot used for school bus parking and vehicle staging.
The HHI Hitchcock Heliport was a private heliport owned and operated by Halter Marine Group, a major US shipbuilder. The 'HHI' in the name likely referred to a company subsidiary, such as Halter-Hatteras Inc. The heliport's primary role was logistical support for the large-scale marine fabrication yard. Operations included transporting company executives, potential clients, and engineers to and from the facility. It also likely played a role in the rapid transport of personnel or critical small parts to vessels and offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, supporting the region's vital maritime and energy industries.
None. The site is fully utilized by the Hitchcock Independent School District for non-aviation purposes. The infrastructure for a heliport no longer exists, and the land has been permanently redeveloped. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the heliport.
