Sometime between 1982 and 1994. The airport was still depicted on the 1982 sectional chart but was noted as closed on the 1994 chart. The closure likely occurred in the mid-to-late 1980s when the land was sold for redevelopment.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The airport was a privately-owned, public-use facility. The land became more valuable for industrial development than for continued aviation operations. It was sold to a commercial entity, which then redeveloped the site.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as an airfield. It is now the location of a large industrial and distribution complex for Wise Foods, Inc., a prominent snack food manufacturer. All airport infrastructure, including the runway, taxiways, and hangars, was demolished to make way for the current factory and warehouses. The main building of the Wise facility sits directly on the path of the former runway.
Berwick Airport was a local general aviation airport that served the community of Berwick, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding Columbia County area. When active, it featured a single paved runway (Runway 13/31) approximately 3,000 feet in length. Operations primarily consisted of private pilot activity, flight training, small charter flights, and possibly agricultural aviation. It was a vital asset for local pilots and businesses requiring air access but never hosted scheduled commercial passenger service or had a significant military role. Its historical importance lies in its function as a typical post-war American small-town airfield.
None. The prospect of reopening the airport is zero. The site has been permanently and completely repurposed for large-scale industrial use. Reacquiring the land and demolishing the massive, active Wise Foods facility to rebuild an airport is logistically and financially infeasible. There are no known plans or discussions to re-establish an airport at this location.
