The airport was closed sometime between 1993 and 2004. It was still depicted on the 1993 Dallas-Fort Worth Sectional Chart but was no longer shown on the 2004 chart. Satellite imagery from the early 2000s shows the beginning of redevelopment on the runway site, suggesting closure occurred in the late 1990s or early 2000s.
Economic reasons and land redevelopment. The airstrip was closed to facilitate the expansion of the adjacent Grandpappy Point Resort & Marina. The land occupied by the runway became more valuable for constructing large, dry-stack boat storage facilities and additional parking to serve the growing marina.
The site of the former landing strip has been completely redeveloped and is now fully integrated into the Grandpappy Point Resort & Marina. The area where the runway once lay is now occupied by several large, multi-story dry boat storage buildings, extensive paved parking lots, and service roads for moving boats to and from the water.
Grandpappy Point Landing Strip was a private general aviation airfield established to support the resort community on Lake Texoma. Its primary function was to provide convenient 'fly-in' access for pilots who were patrons of the marina, local residents, or vacationers. It allowed individuals to fly their light aircraft directly to the lake for recreational purposes. The airfield featured a single runway, approximately 2,600 feet long, and primarily handled single-engine private planes. It was a unique amenity that catered to the aviation and boating communities.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and extensively redeveloped with significant, permanent infrastructure (large buildings, concrete foundations, and paved lots) built directly over the former runway. Re-establishing an airfield at this location is considered infeasible.
