The airport was closed between 1979 and 1981. It was still depicted on the 1979 New York Sectional Chart but had been removed by the time the 1981 chart was published.
The closure was due to economic reasons, specifically the increasing value of the land for suburban development. As the Whitehouse Station area grew, the property became more profitable for residential housing than for operating a small, private airfield. This is a common reason for the closure of many small general aviation airports in the United States.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a residential housing community. The memory of the airfield is preserved through the street names in the neighborhood, which include 'Lance Drive' (named for the airport's owner), 'Propeller Place', and 'Tailwind Lane'. No physical traces of the runway, hangars, or other airport infrastructure remain.
Lance Airport, also known as Lance Field, was a private general aviation airfield that served the local community's recreational flying needs. It was likely established in the post-WWII aviation boom, sometime between 1946 and 1954. The airport consisted of a single unpaved, turf runway, which was noted on aeronautical charts in the 1960s as being approximately 2,200 feet long. It was a characteristic example of a small, privately-owned field supporting personal aviation before the area was overtaken by suburban sprawl.
There are zero prospects for reopening Lance Airport. The land has been irreversibly and densely developed with single-family homes, making any future use for aviation purposes impossible.
