Approximately 1995.
The airport was a private field owned and operated by Joseph Lentine for his crop-dusting business. It was closed following his death in 1995 as the family did not continue the aviation operations.
The airport site is abandoned and inactive. As of the 2020s, satellite imagery shows the former runway layout is still clearly visible but is heavily overgrown with pines and other vegetation characteristic of the Pinelands. There are no remaining buildings or infrastructure on the site, and the land is reverting to its natural state. It is located within the protected New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, and there is no public access.
Lentine South Airport, also known by its former FAA identifier 2N9, was a private airfield established in the late 1950s. Its primary role was serving as the base for the Lentine Dusting Service, a prominent agricultural aviation business that serviced the extensive blueberry fields and cranberry bogs of the New Jersey Pinelands. The airport featured two sand/turf runways (longest at 3,000 ft) and was a key local hub for crop-dusting operations, representing a typical example of a post-war, owner-operated general aviation field.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Due to its location within the environmentally sensitive and highly regulated New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, any new development, including the re-establishment of an airport, would face significant regulatory hurdles and is considered extremely unlikely.
