Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 1980 and 1994. The airfield was depicted on the 1980 Charlotte Sectional Chart but was no longer listed as an active airfield on the 1994 chart. The closure occurred when its operations were moved to a new, nearby location.

Reason for Closure

Relocation. This original 'Eagles Nest Airport' was a private airfield built by farmer Sandy Jones. His son, Robert Jones, later constructed a new, single-runway airfield, also named Eagles Nest Airport (which was assigned FAA identifier 6N9), approximately 1.5 miles to the southwest. Upon the opening of the new field, the original 'X'-runway site was abandoned and operations were consolidated at the new location.

Current Status

The site is now private property and has reverted to agricultural use, specifically as a cultivated farm field. There are no remaining airport buildings or infrastructure. However, the faint outline of the former 'X' shaped runways is still clearly visible from aerial and satellite imagery due to soil compaction and differences in vegetation.

Historical Significance

Established around 1960, the original Eagles Nest Airport was a private airfield primarily serving the agricultural community. Its main function was as a base for crop-dusting aircraft. The airfield was notable for its distinct layout, featuring two unpaved turf runways, each approximately 2,600 feet long, arranged in an 'X' configuration. This allowed for takeoffs and landings in multiple wind directions. It was a well-known local landmark for general aviation pilots in eastern North Carolina.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the original Eagles Nest Airport. The land is privately owned farmland. Furthermore, its replacement airfield (the relocated Eagles Nest Airport, 6N9) was itself permanently closed around 2014 following the death of its owner, making the revival of the original, long-abandoned site exceptionally unlikely.
