The airport was closed between 1993 and 1998. It was still listed on the 1993 Kansas City Sectional Chart but was no longer depicted on the 1998 World Aeronautical Chart. Aerial photography from 1995 shows the runway intact, while imagery from the early 2000s shows the land being repurposed.
The closure was due to land redevelopment for residential use. As the area around Peculiar, south of the Kansas City metropolitan area, experienced suburban growth, the land value for housing likely surpassed its value as a private airfield. The construction of a large private home and associated outbuildings directly on the former airport grounds confirms this repurposing.
The site is now a private residential property. The distinct outline of the former north-south runway is still visible in satellite imagery as a long, mowed grass lawn behind a large, modern single-family home. The original hangar appears to have been removed and replaced with a large residential outbuilding or garage. The entire property has been fully integrated into a rural residential/exurban landscape.
West Aero Ranch Airport (former FAA LID: 0MO2) was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield. Established sometime between 1965 and 1972, it served local private pilots. The airport featured a single unpaved turf runway (17/35) approximately 2,600 feet in length and at least one hangar. Its operations were limited to light, single-engine aircraft for recreational flying and personal transport. It held no major commercial or military significance, representing a typical private grass strip common in rural America during that era.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been permanently and completely redeveloped for residential use, with private homes and structures built over the former airfield footprint, making any return to aviation operations impossible.
