Circa 1970-1971. The airport was last depicted on the 1970 Wichita Sectional Chart. By 1971, flight guides listed a new replacement airport, indicating the original Kiowa Airport had been closed.
Relocation and replacement. The airport was closed following the construction and opening of the new Kiowa–Tri-County Municipal Airport (FAA LID: K53), located a few miles to the northeast. The new airport offered superior facilities, including a paved runway, making the original turf-runway airport obsolete.
The site has been completely decommissioned and converted back to agricultural use. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the land is now a cultivated farm field. The faint, ghostly outline of the former north-south runway is still barely visible under the crop patterns, but all airport infrastructure has been removed.
The original Kiowa Airport was a small general aviation airfield that served the local community of Kiowa, Kansas. Its earliest known depiction is on the 1953 Wichita Sectional Chart. It featured a single, unpaved turf runway (Runway 17/35) approximately 2,200 feet long. Operations were typical for a rural airfield of its era, primarily supporting private pilots, light aircraft, and agricultural aviation (crop dusting). It was a basic but vital link for the local community before being replaced by a more modern facility.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been fully reclaimed for private agriculture. Furthermore, the community's aviation needs are actively and more effectively served by the nearby Kiowa–Tri-County Municipal Airport (K53), making the reopening of the old, less-equipped site both unnecessary and economically unfeasible.
