Approximately 2014-2016. The airport was a private landing strip registered to owner Robert L. Rummel, who passed away in December 2013. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the turf runway was clearly maintained and active through 2013. By 2016, the runway shows significant overgrowth and a lack of maintenance, indicating it ceased operations in the years immediately following the owner's death.
The closure was the direct result of the death of its private owner and operator. As a 'Restricted Landing Area,' its operation was for personal use. With no one to maintain or use the airstrip after the owner's passing, it was abandoned and allowed to revert to its natural state.
The site is now agricultural land. The physical location of the former runway is part of a larger field on a private farm. While a very faint outline of the strip is still visible in some satellite views, the ground has been effectively reclaimed for farming, likely for hay or other crops. The airport is permanently and indefinitely closed, with no remaining aviation infrastructure.
Rummel Restricted Landing Area was a privately owned and operated turf airstrip. It held no major historical significance in a public or military context. Its purpose was for personal, recreational general aviation flying by its owner. The facility consisted of a single turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long and 100 feet wide, suitable for light aircraft. It is representative of thousands of private 'farm strips' across the United States, built by aviation enthusiasts for their own use.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. As it was a private facility intrinsically linked to its former owner, reopening would require the current landowner to invest in re-establishing the runway and registering it with the FAA. Given that the land has been integrated back into agricultural use, a revival of the airstrip is considered extremely unlikely.
