Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport was closed sometime between 1994 and 2004. It was last depicted on the St. Louis Sectional Aeronautical Chart in 1994 but was no longer shown on the 2004 edition of the same chart.

Reason for Closure

The specific reason for closure is not officially documented. As a small, privately owned airfield (owned by W.C. Cornell), its closure was most likely due to factors common for such facilities, such as the owner's retirement or death, economic non-viability, rising insurance or maintenance costs, or the decision to repurpose the land for more profitable agricultural use.

Current Status

The site has been fully converted back to agricultural land. Current satellite imagery shows that the property is actively farmed. While the faint outline of the former north-south runway is still slightly visible in the field, it is completely overgrown and integrated into the surrounding farmland. The original airport buildings, if any besides a possible hangar, appear to be used as part of the adjacent farm.

Historical Significance

Cornell Airport (formerly FAA ID: 3II2) was a private general aviation airfield established between 1968 and 1972. It served the local aviation community in Warrick County, Indiana. The airport consisted of a single 2,600-foot turf runway aligned north-south (Runway 18/36). Its operations were limited to private, non-commercial use, catering to recreational pilots and their personal aircraft. It never handled scheduled commercial flights or had any military significance.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Cornell Airport. The land has been used for agriculture for over two decades, and its status as a small, private strip makes its revival for aviation purposes extremely unlikely.
