Approximately 2011-2012. The heliport ceased operations following the acquisition of its associated hospital, Palmyra Medical Center, by the Phoebe Putney Health System in late 2011.
Operational consolidation and redundancy. After the acquisition, critical care and Level II trauma services were centralized at the main Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital campus. This centralization included air ambulance services, making the Palmyra Park Heliport redundant as Phoebe operated its own modern heliport (Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital Heliport, FAA LID: GA73) just a few miles away.
The site of the former heliport has been completely repurposed. The coordinates point to an area on the Phoebe Palmyra campus (the former Palmyra Medical Center) that is now a parking lot and landscaped grounds. The hospital building itself remains an active part of the Phoebe Putney Health System, offering various outpatient and specialized medical services, but it is no longer the primary emergency hub that would necessitate an on-site heliport.
Palmyra Park Heliport was a private-use facility that served the Palmyra Medical Center. Its sole and vital function was to support the hospital's emergency and critical care operations. It handled medical evacuation (medevac) flights, allowing for the rapid transport of critically ill or injured patients from accident scenes and smaller regional facilities directly to the hospital's emergency department.
Extremely low to none. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening this heliport. The parent organization, Phoebe Putney Health System, has fully consolidated its air medical operations at its main downtown Albany campus. The closure was a strategic decision to eliminate operational duplication, and there is no current or foreseeable need for a second heliport at the Palmyra campus.
