Approximately 2012. The heliport ceased all operations concurrently with the closure of the large resort hotel it served, the Hyatt Orlando. The entire site, including the hotel and heliport, was subsequently demolished between 2014 and 2015.
Economic reasons and large-scale redevelopment. The heliport was a private amenity for the Hyatt Orlando hotel. After operating for over 40 years, the aging hotel was closed and sold. The new owners demolished the entire property to build the Margaritaville Resort Orlando, making the heliport's closure permanent due to the complete redevelopment of the land.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable from its previous state. The exact coordinates of the former heliport now fall within the parking lot and grounds of the Margaritaville Resort Orlando, which officially opened in January 2019. There are no physical remnants of the heliport.
The Orlando Sun Resort Heliport was the designated name for the private helipad located at the sprawling Hyatt Orlando hotel complex. For decades, it served as a key amenity in the heart of Kissimmee's tourist corridor. Its primary operations included:
1. **Tourism:** It was a base for helicopter tour companies offering aerial sightseeing flights over nearby Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and other Orlando attractions.
2. **VIP Transport:** It provided convenient, direct access for high-profile guests, celebrities, and executives attending conferences or vacationing at the resort, allowing them to bypass road traffic from Orlando International Airport (MCO) or other private airfields.
Its significance lies in its role as part of the high-end tourism infrastructure that supported the Orlando area's massive growth from the 1970s through the early 2000s.
None. The original facility has been permanently demolished. The ICAO identifier US-10538 is retired. For helicopter operations to resume at this location, the owners of the Margaritaville Resort would need to construct an entirely new heliport and obtain new approvals and certifications from the FAA. There are no publicly known plans or proposals to do so.
Formerly Orlando Hyatt House, Orlando Sun Resort, Ramada Orlando Celebration Resort. This property is now closed and derelict.
