The airport was likely closed between the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was still depicted on the 1970 Washington Sectional Chart and visible in 1988 aerial photos, but it was no longer shown on the 1993 edition of the chart. By 1994, aerial imagery shows the runway deteriorating, and by 2002, the site was actively being redeveloped.
The closure was due to a change in land ownership and subsequent redevelopment. The historic Meadow Farm was sold by the Chenery family in the late 1970s. The property was eventually acquired to become the new home for the State Fair of Virginia. The development of this large-scale public event venue, The Meadow Event Park, made the private airstrip obsolete and its land was repurposed for the fairgrounds.
The site of the former airport has been completely transformed and is now The Meadow Event Park, a large, multi-purpose venue located in Doswell, Virginia. The park is the permanent home of the State Fair of Virginia and hosts numerous other events, including concerts, trade shows, and festivals. The land that once formed the runway is now occupied by exhibition halls (such as the Farm Bureau Center), extensive parking lots, and open grounds used for fair activities. There are no visible traces of the former airfield.
Meadow Farm Airport was a private turf runway primarily associated with the historically significant Meadow Farm, a major thoroughbred horse breeding operation. Its greatest claim to fame is its connection to the Chenery family and their legendary racehorses, including Riva Ridge (1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner) and especially Secretariat, the 1973 Triple Crown champion, who was born at the farm. The airfield, which featured a single unpaved runway approximately 3,400 feet long, was used for the private air travel of the owners, staff, and their associates, facilitating access to the nationally renowned equestrian estate.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and completely redeveloped into a major state event complex. The infrastructure of The Meadow Event Park makes any return to aviation use impossible and unfeasible.
