The heliport was closed due to the complete relocation of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center from its original St. Landry Street campus to a new, modern facility on Ambassador Caffery Parkway. The closure was part of the decommissioning of the old hospital site.
The original hospital site, including the location of the former heliport, was purchased by the Lafayette Consolidated Government. The site has been redeveloped into the Lafayette Public Safety Complex, which houses various municipal departments, including the Lafayette Police Department headquarters.
As a hospital heliport, its primary function was for medical evacuation (medevac) and patient transport. It was a critical component of the regional emergency medical services (EMS) infrastructure, serving as a receiving point for air ambulance services like Acadian Ambulance's Air Med. The heliport enabled the rapid transport of critically ill or injured patients from accident scenes and other medical facilities to the hospital's emergency department and Level III trauma center, playing a vital role in the healthcare of the Acadiana region for decades.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this specific heliport. A new, modern heliport (FAA LID: 9LA1) was constructed and is fully operational at the new Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center location (4801 Ambassador Caffery Pkwy), making the original heliport redundant and obsolete.
