Late 2018. The airport's primary operator, Skydive Kansas City, held its final weekend of operations at the Paola location in December 2018 before moving.
Business relocation. The airport was a private-use field whose existence was tied to the skydiving business that operated there. When Skydive Kansas City relocated to Butler Memorial Airport (KMKO) in Missouri, the Cloud 9 Airport ceased to be an active airfield.
The airport is permanently closed and no longer appears on aviation charts. The site is now a private rural property. Satellite imagery shows that the grass runway's outline is still visible, but it is no longer maintained for aviation use. The hangars and associated buildings remain standing on the property, which is now used for private, non-aviation purposes.
Cloud 9 Airport was a private airfield that served as a major center for recreational skydiving in the Kansas City metropolitan area for many years. Its primary and most significant operation was hosting Skydive Kansas City. The airport featured a single north-south turf runway (18/36) approximately 2600 feet long. It handled light general aviation aircraft, specifically jump planes such as Cessna 182s and other similar models, which transported thousands of tandem and licensed skydivers annually.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Cloud 9 Airport. The former operator is successfully established at a new, larger airport, and the land is under private ownership with no indication of a return to aviation activity.
