Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 1968 and 1970. The airfield was present on the 1968 Detroit Sectional Chart but had been removed by the 1970 edition, indicating closure within that two-year timeframe.

Reason for Closure

Economic pressures and urban development. The land, situated in a growing suburban area just north of Flint, became more valuable for real estate than for aviation. The site was sold and redeveloped to meet the demand for residential and commercial properties.

Current Status

The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a mixed-use area. The northern portion of the old runway is now a residential street named 'Duford Drive', lined with single-family homes. The southern portion has been developed into a light industrial and commercial park, with buildings located along 'Aviation Drive'. The names of these streets are a direct homage to the site's aviation history, and their layout still loosely follows the alignment of the original runway.

Historical Significance

Duford Field was a privately owned, public-use general aviation airport that operated from the late 1940s until the late 1960s. Established by S. A. Duford, it first appeared on aeronautical charts in 1949. The airport featured a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,600 feet long. It primarily served the local private pilot community, offering basic services such as 80-octane fuel and minor aircraft maintenance. It was a characteristic example of the small, local airfields that supported the post-World War II boom in private aviation before many were closed due to urban expansion.

Reopening Prospects

None. The site has been fully and permanently redeveloped with residential homes, commercial buildings, and infrastructure. There is no remaining land or facility for aviation operations, making any prospect of reopening the airport infeasible.
