Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately late 2010

Reason for Closure

Facility relocation and upgrade. The heliport, officially known as St. Joseph's Hospital Heliport (FAA: FA61), was decommissioned as part of a major hospital expansion. It was replaced by a new, larger, and more modern helipad (FAA: 04FL) constructed on top of the new patient tower that houses the Heart and Vascular Institute and the expanded Emergency Center, which opened in October 2010.

Current Status

The physical site of the original heliport is now simply the roof of an older section of the St. Joseph's Hospital main building. Satellite imagery shows the area is now occupied by HVAC equipment and other rooftop infrastructure, with no remaining helipad markings. All helicopter operations for the hospital now use the new, active helipad (FAA: 04FL) located a short distance to the southeast on the same hospital campus.

Historical Significance

The heliport was a critical piece of infrastructure for St. Joseph's Hospital, a major regional medical center and a designated Level II Trauma Center. Its primary function was to support Emergency Medical Services (EMS) by receiving air ambulance helicopters. Operators, most notably Bayflite, used the heliport to rapidly transport critically injured patients from accident scenes and to transfer patients from other medical facilities. This direct rooftop access was vital for the 'golden hour' of trauma care, significantly improving patient outcomes by minimizing transport time.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the original US-10510 / FA61 heliport. It has been permanently and intentionally replaced by a superior facility on the same campus that fully supports the hospital's ongoing and future needs for emergency air transport. The hospital's air ambulance service is fully operational from the new location.
