The airport was closed sometime between 1998 and 2004. The last known aeronautical chart to depict the airport as active was the 1998 Houston Sectional Chart. By the time the 2004 chart was published, it was no longer listed. FAA records from 2005 also confirm its closure.
The specific reason for the closure is not publicly documented. However, as a small, private airstrip associated with a ranch, the closure was almost certainly due to private reasons. Common factors for such closures include the sale of the property, the owner no longer being an active pilot, the cost of maintenance and insurance becoming prohibitive, or a simple lack of use. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a major accident or for military conversion.
The site of the former airport remains rural land, consistent with the surrounding ranching and agricultural area. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (30.3433, -96.307198) clearly shows the faint but unmistakable outline of the former north-south runway. The turf runway is overgrown and is now used as pasture for grazing. There are no remaining airport structures like hangars or terminal buildings on the site. The land has been fully reclaimed for agricultural use.
Flying C Ranch Airport (which also had the FAA identifier 3TA3) was a private-use airfield. Its primary purpose was to serve the transportation and recreational needs of the owners of the Flying C Ranch. It was first depicted on aviation charts around 1981 and featured a single unpaved, turf runway estimated to be 3,000 feet long. Operations would have been limited to light, single-engine general aviation aircraft capable of using a short, unpaved strip. Its historical significance is minimal and confined to the private history of the ranch it served.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Flying C Ranch Airport. As the land is privately owned and has been inactive as an airfield for over two decades, reopening is considered extremely unlikely. It would require the current landowner to have a significant interest in aviation and be willing to invest in restoring the runway and meeting current FAA requirements for a private airstrip.
