Approximately between 1987 and 1993. Aerial photography from 1993 shows the runway marked with closed 'X' symbols, while it was still listed as active on aeronautical charts in 1987.
Military downsizing and base realignment. The airfield was part of the Fort Gillem military installation. As the fort's mission evolved and was eventually scaled down under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission, the need for a dedicated airfield diminished, leading to its closure and eventual redevelopment.
The site of the former Morris Army Airfield has been completely demolished and redeveloped. The land is now part of the Gillem Logistics Center, a large, modern industrial park containing numerous warehouses and distribution facilities for major companies. There are no remaining traces of the runway, taxiways, or hangars.
Morris Army Airfield was a military airfield established during World War II. It was co-located with the Atlanta Army Depot at Fort Gillem. Its primary function was not as a training or combat base, but as a crucial logistical support field. Operations consisted mainly of utility, transport, and courier flights using light transport and observation aircraft. The airfield facilitated the rapid movement of high-priority personnel and critical supplies for the massive Army depot, which served the entire southeastern United States. It remained active in this support role for several decades after the war.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and thoroughly repurposed for industrial and commercial use. The complete removal of all aviation infrastructure and the construction of large, permanent buildings make any future as an airfield impossible. Furthermore, its close proximity to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) makes a smaller airport at this location redundant.
