Circa late 2007 - early 2008. The heliport ceased official operations following the acquisition of its owner, Med-South Ambulance Service, Inc., by Acadian Ambulance on October 1, 2007.
Business acquisition and operational consolidation. Acadian Ambulance, a much larger regional provider, acquired the smaller Med-South Ambulance Service. Following the acquisition, Med-South's assets and operations, including its air medical services, were integrated into Acadian's extensive network. This consolidation made the dedicated Med-South heliport redundant, leading to its closure to streamline operations and eliminate duplicated services.
The site is no longer an active or certified heliport. The building that once housed Med-South Ambulance and its rooftop helipad is now an operational ground station for Acadian Ambulance. Current satellite imagery shows the helipad markings on the roof have been completely removed. The location is now used exclusively for dispatching and housing ground ambulance crews and vehicles.
Med-South Heliport was a private-use, rooftop heliport that served as the primary air base for Med-South Ambulance Service. Its function was exclusively for Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). The heliport was a critical component of the emergency medical infrastructure for Opelousas and the surrounding St. Landry Parish, providing rapid air transport for critically ill and injured patients. It facilitated transfers from accident scenes and smaller rural medical facilities to larger, better-equipped hospitals and trauma centers in the region. The heliport, identified by the FAA with the location ID US-10484, represented a vital local life-saving service before its operations were absorbed by a larger entity.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Med-South Heliport. The air medical transport needs for the Opelousas region are comprehensively covered by Acadian Ambulance's own air division, 'Air Med,' which operates a fleet of helicopters from strategically located bases throughout Louisiana. The closure was a result of a permanent business consolidation, making the reopening of this specific, small heliport economically unviable and operationally unnecessary.
