The airport was closed sometime between 1994 and 1999. The last known aeronautical chart to depict Zips Airport as operational was the 1994 Atlanta Sectional Chart. By the time of a 1999 aerial photograph, the runway was clearly marked with a standard closed-runway 'X' symbol, confirming it was no longer in service.
The closure was due to economic reasons, specifically the sale of the land for suburban real estate development. Located in a rapidly growing area south of Atlanta, the land's value for residential housing far exceeded its value as a private airfield. This is a common fate for small, privately-owned airports in expanding metropolitan areas.
The site of the former airport has been completely and permanently redeveloped. The land is now occupied by the Lake Iris residential subdivision in McDonough, Georgia. The former runway, hangars, and any associated structures have been demolished and replaced with single-family homes, paved streets (like Lake Iris Boulevard), and neighborhood amenities. There are no remaining physical traces of the airport.
Zips Airport (also known by the FAA location identifier GA04) was a small, privately-owned general aviation airfield. Its historical significance is primarily local, serving its owner and possibly other private pilots in the area. It was not a commercial or military facility. The 1982 AOPA's Airport Directory described it as having a single unpaved turf runway (18/36) measuring 2,600 feet in length. Operations were limited to small, private aircraft for recreational or personal travel. The name 'Zips' is believed to be derived from the name of the original owner.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been fully utilized for high-density residential housing, making it physically and legally impossible to re-establish an airfield at this location.
