Approximately 1999-2000
The heliport did not physically close but was renamed and re-identified due to a corporate merger and hospital rebranding. In 1999, Lutheran Health Systems (the parent organization of Mesa Lutheran Hospital) merged with Samaritan Health System to form Banner Health. Consequently, Mesa Lutheran Hospital was renamed Banner Mesa Medical Center (and later became part of the Banner Desert Medical Center campus). The heliport's ICAO identifier, US-10468, associated with the old hospital name, was decommissioned and replaced with a new FAA identifier.
The site is the location of the modern and expanded Banner Desert Medical Center (1400 S Dobson Rd, Mesa, AZ). The physical heliport remains active and operational at the same coordinates. It is now officially known as Banner Mesa Medical Center Heliport, with the FAA Location Identifier (LID) AZ61. It continues to serve its original purpose, handling medevac flights for the Level I Trauma Center at Banner Desert and the adjacent Cardon Children's Medical Center.
As the heliport for Mesa Lutheran Hospital, its primary and critical role was to support medical evacuation (medevac) and air ambulance operations. For several decades, it served as a vital link in the regional emergency medical services (EMS) chain for Mesa and the surrounding East Valley. The heliport enabled the rapid transport of critically ill and trauma patients directly to the hospital's emergency facilities, significantly reducing transport times and improving patient outcomes.
There are zero prospects for reopening under the original name or ICAO code US-10468. The heliport never ceased operations; it was simply re-designated to align with the new hospital ownership and name. The current heliport, AZ61, is fully functional and integral to the operations of one of Arizona's busiest medical centers. The former identifier is permanently obsolete.
