The airport was closed sometime between 1996 and 2003. It was still listed as active in the 1996 AOPA Airport Directory but was depicted as an abandoned airfield on the 2003 Dallas-Fort Worth Sectional Chart.
The primary reason for closure was economic, specifically the failure of the associated fly-in community to fully materialize and the subsequent sale of the land for more profitable conventional residential development. As the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex expanded southward, the value of the land for suburban housing far exceeded its value as a private airfield, leading to its redevelopment.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into a suburban housing subdivision. There are no visible remnants of the runway, taxiways, or hangars. However, the aviation history of the location is preserved in the street names within the development, which include 'Air Ranch Drive', 'Cessna Drive', 'Piper Drive', and 'Mustang Drive'.
Air Ranch Estates Airport was a private airfield established around 1979-1981 as the centerpiece of a planned residential airpark, or 'fly-in community'. Its purpose was to allow residents to own a home with an attached or nearby hangar and have direct taxiway access to a shared runway. When active, it featured a single 2,600-foot unpaved turf runway (17/35) and handled light general aviation aircraft, such as single-engine piston planes (e.g., Cessna, Piper). Its significance lies in its history as an example of the ambitious airpark development trend of the late 20th century, which saw many such projects struggle and ultimately fail.
There are no prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been fully and densely developed with single-family homes, roads, and utilities, making it physically, legally, and financially impossible to re-establish an airfield on the site.
