The airport was officially closed and removed from aeronautical charts between 1981 and 1991. However, the physical runway remained visible in aerial photography through the mid-1990s. The site was completely cleared and the runway was obliterated for new construction around 2001-2002.
Urban encroachment and economic factors. The airport was situated in a rapidly growing suburban area of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The land's value for commercial development far exceeded its value as a private airstrip, leading to its sale and redevelopment.
The site of the former airport is now a dense commercial and retail development. The former runway's location is now occupied by large retail stores (including an At Home and a Studio Movie Grill), restaurants, parking lots, and major roadways such as MacArthur Boulevard. The area is located immediately west of the Music City Mall (formerly Vista Ridge Mall) and east of Interstate 35E.
Black Mark Strip, more commonly known as 'Black's Field' or 'Blacks Landing Strip', was a private general aviation airport. It was owned by an individual named M.T. Black. The airport featured a single, unpaved north-south runway approximately 2,200 feet in length. It was active from at least the early 1960s through the 1980s, serving the owner and likely other local private pilots. It was a characteristic example of the numerous small, private airfields that once dotted the landscape around major American cities before being consumed by suburban sprawl.
None. The site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped with high-value commercial properties. There is no physical space remaining for a runway, and the surrounding area is heavily developed, making any prospect of reopening the airport impossible.
