Between 1993 and 1995. The airport was depicted on the 1993 Houston Terminal Area Chart but was absent from the 1998 chart. A 1995 aerial photograph clearly shows the runway marked with closed 'X' symbols, indicating it was no longer operational by that year.
The specific reason is not officially documented, but the closure is consistent with economic factors common to small, private airfields. These factors often include rising property values and taxes in a developing area, the cost of maintenance and insurance, or the owner selling the land for more profitable industrial or commercial development. The subsequent redevelopment of the site strongly suggests the land was sold for non-aviation use.
The site has been completely redeveloped and bears no resemblance to an airport. As of the early 2000s, the land was repurposed for industrial use. Currently, the exact location of the former runway and hangars is occupied by a large industrial pipe coating and storage facility, operated by companies in the energy sector. The entire area consists of large industrial buildings, extensive outdoor pipe racks, and heavy equipment, with all traces of the runway and aviation hangars having been obliterated.
Ward Airpark, which also used the FAA identifier 3TA8, was a privately owned, public-use airport established between 1978 and 1982. It was owned by J.S. Ward and was sometimes humorously referred to as 'Ward International Airport'. The facility featured a single 3,500-foot turf runway (17/35) and a row of T-hangars, indicating it served as a base for several local general aviation aircraft, not just the owner's. Its primary function was to support the local private flying community in Fort Bend County, providing a convenient base for recreational flying and private transport.
None. The prospect of reopening Ward Airpark as an aviation facility is zero. The land has been permanently and completely redeveloped for heavy industrial use, making any return to its original purpose physically and economically impossible.
