Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately between 1982 and 1992. The airfield was still listed in the 1982 AOPA Airports USA Directory but was no longer depicted on 1994 aeronautical charts. Aerial photography from 1992 shows the runway was still recognizable but appeared inactive, with residential construction beginning on the site by 2002.

Reason for Closure

Suburban development. The primary reason for the airport's closure was the increasing value of the land for residential real estate due to the expansion of suburbs from nearby Lititz and Manheim. The land was sold and redeveloped for housing.

Current Status

The site has been completely redeveloped. The western half of the former airfield is now a housing development named 'The Preserve'. As a tribute to the site's past, the streets within this development bear aviation-themed names, such as Spitfire Drive, Mustang Drive, and Corsair Road. The eastern portion of the former runway is now utilized as agricultural farmland.

Historical Significance

Metzler Airport (also known as Metzler Field) was a small, private general aviation airfield established sometime between 1949 and 1957. It primarily served local private pilots. The facility consisted of a single turf runway (Runway 9/27) with a length of approximately 2,000 feet. It was a characteristic example of the numerous privately-owned, grass-strip airfields that supported the general aviation community in rural America during the mid-20th century. It did not handle commercial or military operations.

Reopening Prospects

None. The prospect of reopening Metzler Airport is non-existent. The land has been permanently repurposed with the construction of a dense residential neighborhood, including homes, streets, and utilities, directly on the former airport grounds.
